    Hats – The Blue Nile
    1989 Linn Records

Ok…so the cover’s not up to much…sort of dark photo with a picture of a bloke in a hat! Turn the cover over and there’s 7, yes 7 tracks listed. The album’s short but so is Kylie… there’s no information, no lyrics, it just says recorded in 1989, Linn Records, produced by The Blue Nile.

I think Blue Nile, sorry THE Blue Nile are a 3 piece from Scotland. They don’t play gigs very often, they don’t do interviews, they don’t make albums very often… every seve...

I think Blue Nile, sorry THE Blue Nile are a 3 piece from Scotland. They don’t play gigs very often, they don’t do interviews, they don’t make albums very often… every seven years or so.

But I’ve been playing the HATS album since 1990 and ok, some of the sounds are a bit 80s, and that drum machine (I think it’s a drum machine) gets on your nerves after a bit and those dodgy keyboard sounds (how did anyone think they sounded ok)…and it’s a bit slow and empty; in fact it was daughter’s ‘going to sleep’ music.

Paul Buchanan is the voice, the songs, the melodies and I think he plays guitar as well… so 7 songs that sound like Glasgow dropped into Manhattan. It’s late, neon lights flashing into dark room… sat at the piano picking out a melody with one hand, cigarette burning in an ashtray, Paul Buchanan “I hope Frank likes this one”

OK that’s me projecting a little but the songs are long and sparse and allow you to wander. In another era Paul Buchanan would have been one of those Tin Pan Alley writers, but he probably came to The Blue Nile via the Sex Pistols and Joy Division. Great classic melodies, not pop, but they stick to your brogues and follow you around town. The Downtown Lights, Let’s Go Out Tonight, Headlights on the Parade …you get the picture (I hope).

    HATS

    THE BLUE NILE
    Linn Records 1989
Also have a listen to Frank Sinatra In the Wee Small Hours 1955 Capitol Records (the first concept album). I’m sure Paul Buchanan must have written a few tracks on this album… but I suppose that’s just me projecting again.

    Micmacs - Out Now
From the acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen and Amelie) comes his latest anarchic, funny, sweet and ever so slightly deranged slice of life. Dany Boon plays the Chaplinesque hero who, as a boy, loses his dad to a land mine, and as a adult loses his job and flat after getting a bullet in the head. Stumbling across a eccentric bunch of outsiders (each with their own particular skill or quirk) he sets about getting revenge on the arms manufacturers responsible for his dad's death and the bullet still lodged in his skull.

The film looks magnificent and Boon is an accomplished physical comedian, more than that, there is much fun to be had from the outlandish schemes the team cook up to turn the arms dealers against each other.

The plot is a finely tuned, amusing and quite silly, but fans of Jeunet's early work, or even Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze will find much to enjoy here.
